A CARNATIC QUARTET
ACQ has been conceptualized as an effort to explore the coming together of two distinct instrumental artforms, within the fabric of South Indian Classical Music. The melodic instruments in this collaboration, Violin, and Nagaswaram, come from very different cultural and musical backgrounds, and similar is the case with the Mridangam and Thavil. The intent is to explore each of these instruments, and the musical traditions from which they come, without restriction, and to witness the magic that happens when they come together. ACQ has its roots in Carnatic music, but explores genres without boundaries, interpreting the music through their unique sound and artistic ethos. The explorations are led musically and sonically, with the sincere endeavour to lay aside preconceived notions, both musical and social, that may accompany these four instruments. Conceived and Conceptualised by Shreya Devnath, A Carnatic Quartet features Shreya Devnath on Violin, Mylai Karthikeyan on Nagaswaram, Praveen Sparsh on Mridangam and Gummudipoondi R Jeeva and Adyar G Silambarasan (alternatingly) on Thavil.
BAND COOUM
As with so many incredible cities in the world today, Chennai has a rich tapestry of different cultures coexisting with one another. And with that, of course, comes different genres of music each belonging to its own little pocket, sometimes interacting with the other, more often staying well ensconced in the area native to it. Band Cooum is a musical coming together of our home, Chennai. We bring together Carnatic music (South Indian classical music), Folk music (through Parai isai) and Electronic music channelling these genres through the framework of our original compositions. We aim to explore these different elements on an even stage, led purely by the immense musicality that each genre offers us - in what is, hopefully, an exploration that is freeing for us and our audiences.
